Sri Lankan executed in Sharjah

2014 Jan 23

Sri Lankan man was executed in Sharjah in the UAE  today for the murder of an Emirati resident, Arabian Business reported.
Earlier Khaleej Times reported that the Sharjah Public Prosecution was preparing to execute the 19 year old Sri Lankan for taking the victim to a desert area and killing him.

Arabian Business later reported that Ravinda Krishna Pillai, a 19-year-old male electrician, was convicted of premeditated murder after he was found guilty of fatally running over the Emirati in an SUV during an argument between the two.

The execution, believed to have been by firing squad, took place this morning in Sharjah.

Executions are rare in the UAE and a leading official told Arabian Business authorities had made every effort to persuade the victim’s family to accept Pillai’s offer of blood money but they insisted on the death penalty being enforced.

Khaleej Times reported that the Sri Lankan was supposed to be executed on Sunday but his execution was postponed due to a national holiday. (Colombo Gazette)
