Accused of several corrupt transactions, UPFAMP Sajin de Vass Gunawardena yesterday said that he was awaiting an opportunity to respond to allegations.

Asked whether he was evading law enforcement authorities, MP Gunawardena told The Island that he had written to the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) on January 21 after the JVP and various other interested parties had lodged complaints against him. "The Commission responded to my letter and now I am awaiting an appointment to explain my position," MP Gunawardena said.

After having received complaints against Galle District MP Gunawardena, the Bribery Commission directed the Controller of Emigration and Immigration to impound the politician’s passport.

Alleging that the on-going campaign against him was politically motivated, MP Gunawardena said that he expected the CIABOC to give him an early date to respond to various allegations directed at him.

An anti-corruption watchdog affiliated to the new government recently complained to the Bribery Commission regarding MP Gunawardena’s Cosmos Aviation Services (Pvt) Limited. JHU spokesman Nishantha Sri Warnasinghe, addressing the media on behalf of the anti-corruption front last week, alleged that Cosmos Aviation had been operating at the expense of Mihin Lanka as well as the national carrier Sri Lankan airlines.

The JVP alleged that MP Gunawardena had acquired aircraft and transferred funds to the US under controversial circumstances. The JVP alleged that the SLFPer had spent US 2 mn on aircraft and helicopters.
